Brief Intro

Do you often find yourself frustrated by the language learning process? Are you convinced that you just don’t have a knack for languages? Do textbooks bore you to tears? You’re not alone.

Automated Language Growth (ALG) asks what if we, as adults, can learn naturally, as children do, through observation and absorption? That is, of course, how most of us acquired our native language(s).

The concept itself isn’t new, but it has been gaining in popularity recently among members of the language learning community.

The Concept

While many (if not most) language learning techniques tell you to speak early and speak often, ALG takes the opposite approach, instead advocating that you wait until you have a significant amount of understanding before you try to speak.

Why? As one learner put it, “Speaking more does not mean you will be speaking correctly,” and unlearning something takes time and effort – often more so than the actual learning process does.

Similar to comprehensible input, this method relies on context for understanding.

For all the learners touting this technique, it is not without its detractors.

Watch this spot – we’re going to delve into this a little deeper.
